As the spring temperatures rise, George Isskidis and The Republic of Desire label are back at last with a fantastic two-tracker of machinesexpharmasoul that's sure to arouse the dancefloor.
The label's last releases in autumn were the excellent Midnight Karaoke album and the United single by Midnight Mike with remixes by fellow label mates Naum Gabo. Whatever Issakidis has been doing in the meantime—from the sound of things, activities involving lots of machines, sex and hallucinogens—the new single finds The Republic of Desire in top form.
It's never been easy to sum up The Republic of Desire with a single genre description, and that's never been truer than it is here. Both "Explicit" and "Hotter Now" grind away at tempos a little slower than the norm, but they're as heavy as it comes, bursting with the energy of acid, electro, techno and experimental synthesizer music—like potent distillations of electronic music's most powerful tendencies, dispensed by eyedropper on the tip of the tongue."Explicit" affords a glimpse inside Issakidis' collection of rare electronic instruments, as a clattering,
metallic beat frames mercurial acid sequences that writhe and twist like oiled torsos. You don't get sounds like these out of standard-issue gear, and you don't get structures like this one without indulging your dark side. Described by Issakidis as an homage to foreplay, "Explicit" is a classic exercise in theme and variations rendered as a teasing psychosexual game—with the emphasis, perhaps, on "psycho."
"Hotter Now" slows the tempo yet another notch, but it's infused with a powerful sense of swing that keeps it moving restlessly forward. From skittering white-noise percussion to roiling acid sequences, every element feels unusually alive: this is the sound of machines possessed, as if by incubi and succubi. No movement without friction, no pleasure without repetition—these are the messages that run beneath its grinding rhythms, like an ostinato murmur. Ignore its whisper at your peril.
