Once a heavy user, I check up on breakbeat very rarely these days. Partly because the style became rather stale and unninovative, which made most of such music unbearable for me. After a few year's break, I gave it another shot with the latest compilation by one of the genre's icons. How did things turn out?
Pretty well, even though the breakbeat parts of the CD might as well have been recorded in 2003. But a while ago, Coombs, Meat Katie, Elite Force and artists connected with them went in a direction they decided to call tech funk - a shelf where tracks combining breakbeat, house, techno and electro have found their home. These are mainly heavy party-oriented tunes with broken and 4/4 beats.
And that's the mixture which Lee Coombs' compilation draws its strenght from. This strenghth could easily move a fully packed club, but I assure you that monsters like 'Come Closer', 'TFM' and 'No Hits' work perfectly at home as well.
