‘The Electro Grandaddy‘, ‘the Originator‘, ‘a cornerstone of UK dance music‘ – these are only some of the words that have been said and written about Greg Wilson. A DJ who began playing in 1975 and revoultionized his homeland’s scene by promoting the sound he called electro-funk. In 1983, he abandoned his mixing career, only to return two decades later. His comeback was observed by the owner of 2020 Vision, Ralph Lawson.
Greg and Ralph initially had different plans for a collaboration – they wanted to release a compilation with some true “oldies“, but it occured to them that the licences would cost a fortune. They dropped that idea and returned to their discussion afterwards. This time, however, a label compilation was on the table.
In brief, this is how the second installment of 2020 Vision came to life. An album that is somewhat similar to its creator’s career – it lacks fluency which would keep a listener’s attention from start to finish. From ‘Sweet Deal‘ to ‘Multiply‘ the piece is really amazing, but the rest is nothing more than a collection of better and worse tunes.
