Because I have never been the biggest fan of Guy J's output, reviewing this record came as a bit of a coincidence. Initially, 'Esperanza' was only supposed to keep me company while doing some work not associated in any way with music and nothing more. Things, however, turned out differently than I had planned.

The first bars of the record convinced that I had made the right selection for accompanying music. And this state of affairs went unchanged right up to the fourth track. After the rather simple sounds of the first three, Guy unexpectedly dropped a small bomb, and by doing so somewhat thwarted my oh so diligent and meticulous plan, because proceedings slowed down and moved into 'deeper' territory, only to later pick up pace again with each beat and bar that followed.

In the end, the unavoidable happened when it came time for 'Drumy'. The very first seconds of this perfect track had me focused solely on nothing besides the cut itself, while the remaining minutes of this sonic drama made me completely forget about what it was I was supposed to be doing in the first place. Later, the final two productions on the CD were pretty much the icing on the cake and had me begging for more.

So what's the bottom line? 'Esperanza' is a record that deserves to be listened to a few times over with a great deal of attention. And such a conclusion can be drawn only after the effortless melodies of each track, as well as the very diverse album as whole are given the chance they rightly deserve.
